The Village of Eyam – The Original Quarantine Village of England

During lockdown, we all had to adapt to doing things very differently. We are lucky to be living in an age where we have technology to be able to assist us with living our lives – it meant we could purchase goods online, do exercise classes online and continue to run businesses from the safety of our own home – businesses such as IT support Cheltenham based company https://reformit.co.uk/  were in demand as the need for technology soared.

Lockdown is not new however, and lockdown life was very different in the Derbyshire village of Eyam when the plague hit. In 1665, life changed completely for the residents of this small rural village. It was believed that the disease was brought to the village on a piece of cloth, from a merchant in London.

When they realised that the disease was spreading around the village, the villagers all decided that rather than spread the disease elsewhere the whole village would be locked in – nobody came in, and nobody went out.

The suffering endured by the people in the village was horrendous – one woman lost six of her children as well as her husband within a week, and graveyards were quickly filled up to capacity, so the local fields had to become new graveyards.

For over a year, the village struggled as more and more people died, families were torn apart, and they had to bring their own dead out to the nearby fields. It is easy to forget tales like this, but at times like these, it is worth remembering how the suffering endured by these villagers led to many lives being saved.
