A cyber attack is essentially a way that criminal tries to steal, lock or destroy information from your computer system. The type of attack that they carry out will depend on whether they feel they can use the information that you hold to either sell to other people or to blackmail the owners. In some cases, they disable your access to your information so you can not carry on functioning as a business until you pay the ransom that they ask for. There are forms of cyber attacks that are used primarily to spy on other businesses to try and gain trade and research secrets.

Cyber attacks can happen external to the business that is being targeted and in these cases, it is usually orchestrated by criminal and professional hackers. When the attack is internal this is often a result of unhappy employees or former employees or lack of security policies and careless behaviours by employees, business owners and suppliers and contractors.

The types of information that is targeted will again depend on the work that the business carries out and the kinds of information that they hold in their computer systems.
