Easy macrame tips to know

Macrame is different to other forms of textile-based craft such as knitting or weaving. Knots are used to create seemingly elaborate pieces, with a standard macrame kit only really needing some cords, an instruction booklet and a pattern. That does not mean macrame is easy, but there are a few things you can do to help you master the process.

Put together your macrame kit

Most Wool Couture macrame kits contain the basics of macrame, most notably the cords, pattern and perhaps a more general how-to guide. But more complex pieces may involve other accessories such as wooden hangers. You should also ensure you have some sharp scissors and a tape measure.

Have a comfortable workspace

You need somewhere with a stable table or board where you can work. You need to be able to sit comfortably (perhaps with a cushion) and not feel cramped, and to have adequate lighting, whether natural or electric.

Practice the basics

There are a few knots that feature particularly prominently in macrame and it is easy to find instructions online. Mastering the lark’s head/cow hitch, square knot and double half hitch knot puts you in a strong starting position. Being able to unknot mistakes is important too.

Be Patient

No one gets everything right the first time. Macrame is not easy, and it takes time to master its intricacies. Overcoming mistakes and challenges will make you a better craftsperson in the long term. It can also help you practice patience for the rest of your life. Take breaks when needed.

Measure twice, cut once

Measure twice, cut once is a popular mantra among macrame practitioners. It is about reducing the room for error by focusing on precision. This means you are less likely to waste materials and can save money, as well as the time you would spend trying to fix the mistake.

Don’t throw things away

Sometimes you will be left with odd lengths of cord or pieces that have not quite worked. Save these leftovers for making repairs or to stretch your creative muscles by trying something new, particularly smaller projects.
