A report states that buildings and construction are responsible for 34% of the global energy consumption and 37% of carbon dioxide emissions. The escalating threats of habitat loss and resource depletion, as well as climate change, make it impossible to continue in the same manner.
Sustainable building design is a solution. The benefits are numerous.
- Reduce energy consumption and waste
- Reduce your dependence on traditional energy sources
- Protecting biodiversity and ecosystems
- Improve air and water quality
- Improving the health, comfort and living conditions of residents
- Re-establishing the link between nature and human beings
- Reduce long-term living and building costs
Green architecture will not disappear because of these benefits and the potential for creating jobs that comes with sustainable building design. For Sustainable Architects, visit a site such as https://www.quattrodesign.co.uk/architectural-services/sustainable-architecture-design/
Sustainable architecture examples
There are many notable projects being undertaken around the globe, even though sustainable architecture is still a small part of construction.
One Central Park, in Sydney Australia, is an excellent example. The vertical gardens in the park contain 250 different species of flowers and plants that serve as natural air filtering systems to improve air quality.
Manchester’s One Angel Square, a building that is closer to home, incorporates a number of energy-efficient features. These include a rainwater collection system, natural ventilation, and a combined heating and power plant. The building also uses natural light, and its aerodynamic design reduces heat loss and wind resistance.
