How to choose copper pipe fittings

When undertaking any project or maintenance job, the key is choosing the right materials and the right way of fitting them to suit the task at hand. Copper pipe fittings are no different. They come in an array of shapes and sizes as well as offering different methods of connection. Here we will have a look at the main types.

The different jointing methods.

Generally speaking, the soldered joint is the tried and trusted method of connecting fittings to copper pipes, and most plumbers still favour it. With the application of pipe flux and heat, a soldered joint produces a water-tight seal. It is also a very economical method as the fittings tend to be cheaper than those for other jointing methods. However, there are situations where this may not be viable; if there are any wooden beams or framing close by, then using an open flame is not wise.

Compression joints are an alternative to soldered joints. These work by compressing a brass ring and are flameless but can be tricky to connect in tight spaces as two wrenches are needed to easily tighten the joint. The next type is the push-on joint which is a little more DIY-friendly using an O-Ring. The joint is simply pushed on. The downside is that compression joints are more expensive than other joints and have no structural strength in themselves, requiring extra support in some cases.

There are some newer developments in the push-on market as can be seen here: watkinspowis.co.uk/products/copper-pipe-fittings-and-press-systems.

Finally, there are Clamp-On or Pro-Set fittings. These work with an O-Ring too, but need a special tool to crimp them in place. While these provide a strong joint, they tend to be expensive, as is the cost of the tooling. All of these systems have their place, but trade guidelines and industry standards should always be followed as seen here:

Conclusions.

The type of fitting you use and the material it is made from will very much depend on ease of access, the surroundings you are working in, and the budget you need to work within.
