Where Can You Source Reclaimed Timber?

Reclaimed wood is any type of wood that has previously been used for something in a previous life. So you could have a floor made from reclaimed wood that had previously been used in the construction of a barn for example. Many people love this kind of wood due not only for its history but because it is often beautifully aged and unique.

Old barns

Old barns and buildings are a great source of good high-quality timber and are easy to come by. Many barn owners will happily offer you their wood just to get it out the way, especially if the roof has gone and the barn has started to fall into disrepair and proving to be a safety hazard. Alternatively, you could put an advert in your local newspaper advertising the fact that you’re willing to pick up any discarded wood in the area. You’ll be surprised at how much interest you receive.

Renovators

One of the easiest ways of getting your hands on some reclaimed timber is to get in touch with building renovators. Tell them that you’re looking for any timber that they might need to get rid of during a renovation job and they’ll happily supply you with anything they were going to chuck away. It’ll save them a bit of money on disposal costs and give you exactly what you’re after.

The most obvious place is to head down to the reclamation yard. Here you’ll be able to choose from a whole host of different types and sizes of wood. A reclamation yard will be able to provide you with all kinds of wood including oak, mahogany, walnut and elm. These are all hardwoods and provide the best quality woods if you’re after something that is long lasting. According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reclaimed_lumber the lack of air pollution that existed up to the 20th century is the reason reclaimed wood is often of increased strength.

Building demolishers

Farmers who are looking to demolish their barns or outhouses will call a developer or demolisher first to see if they can do the job for them. Contacting demolishers is a great way of picking up some lumber for free. Contact as many as you can and let them know that you’re interested in reclaimed timber.
