Looking After yourself as a Carer

Many people in the UK are carers – they care for a friend or family member who is having a health problem. This is something that although rewarding can also be quite tiring, time consuming and draining, so when you are a carer, knowing what skills to have as well as the right way to look after yourself is important.

Spending time focussing on the needs of someone else can be hard work. Learning some essential skills can be beneficial when you are a carer such as attending emergency first aid training courses like these offered by Tidal Training but caring for you is also essential. If you are a career, here are a few things that you can do to help yourself…

Have someone that you can speak to – Speaking about how you feel is an essential outlet. We all have hard days, and as a carer, the focus is often not on you. But you do need to speak to someone whose attention is on you and can listen to you, whether that is a trusted friend or family member or a professional like a counsellor.

Make time for you – Although you are a carer, you are still a person with hobbies, interests and needs, so it is vital that you set some time aside to be able to do the things you love. Whether you want to go hiking or spend some time soaking in the bath with a good book.
